CHAPTER 1: THE NOTICE

The air in Yale's Beinecke Rare Book Library held the stillness that came with centuries of collected knowledge. Marble panels filtered the afternoon sunlight into a honeyed glow, creating the perfect illumination for examining ancient texts. It was bright enough to reveal detail without damaging fragile parchments. 

The library's distinctive architecture included a rectangular box of Vermont marble and granite suspended within a granite and bronze frame which was created as a sanctuary that felt both modern and timeless. From the outside, the building appeared as a perfect geometric form, windowless except for narrow slits; from within, the translucent marble walls transformed harsh sunlight into a diffuse glow that seemed to emanate from the stone itself.

Ava Calloway had learned to love that stillness in the two years since she'd arrived as an unusually young freshman. At seventeen, she was already deep into her second year of studies, courtesy of advanced placement credits and her relentless academic drive. 

The Beinecke had become her refuge; a place where the whispers of ancient voices were louder than the buzz of contemporary campus life. Here, surrounded by rare manuscripts and first editions, she could lose herself in the puzzle of languages long silent, finding patterns and connections that others missed.

Today, she bent over a fragment of parchment so delicate it might dissolve beneath an incautious touch.
